By: Summer Prospero
Book: ‘Grammar and the Teaching of Writing: Limits and Possibilities’ by R. Noguchi
Why This Book:
- R. Noguchi is a well respected Professor.
- From the first chapter, it re-taught me a few things I forgot.
- The book is easy to follow in terms of how to teach writing and how to use grammar with students.
- Many examples of how to teach ‘subject’ ‘pronoun’
Book Outline:
Chapter 1: The Limits of Grammar in Writing Improvement // The connection between Grammar and Writing, The relative importance of style to writing quality, and making grammar instruction more productive.
Chapter 2: The Basics of a Writer's Grammar // Identifying the Basic Categories and A minimal set of Categories
Chapter 3: Teaching the Basics of a Writer's Grammar // The problems of teaching grammatical categories, cracking the grammar code, the underlying knowledge of pronoun and the main verb.
Chapter 4: Run-ons, Comma Splices, and Native speakers abilities //Treating Run-ons and comma splices, a proper perspective.
Chapter 5: Fragments and Beyond // fragments in speech, fragments in writing, recognizing the structure of fragments, Integrating content and organization, the role of grammar in writing instruction.
Chapter 6: The Paradoxes of Grammar Instruction.
Teaching Ideas
Strategy One: Journal Entries, have them free write at the beginning of class then go back at the end and have a peer check for grammar.
Strategy Two: Let the student pick the prompts.
Strategy Three: Fill in the blank and multiple-choice quizzes. (44, 46.47, 51-58)
Challenges:
- Students will still be confused with some of the grammar rules, messing up peer review for both themselves and other students.
- Students will have a hard time writing even if they get to pick their own prompt.
- Students will get flustered or have test anxiety during the multiple-choice and fill in the blank.
