Book: “Connecting Comics to Curriculum: Strategies for Grades 6-12” Karen Gavigan and Mindy Tomasevich.

Rationale:
  • I chose this book because when I skimmed the pages it was easy to understand the content of the book. The book gave multiple examples of lessons, context and has 20+ resource lists.
  • Also, the book tells you the general school criteria that we as teachers should look out for when picking out books to use in the classroom.
  • My understanding of this book influences my way of teaching by knowing that not all students learn the same way and each student needs a respected amount of time to work in the classroom and at home.

Strategy One:
  • The reason I choose this strategy is to show that you can attach a graphic novel to any topic of learning, even one of the most complicated topics.
  •  Direct/Indirect Characterization is a boring topic in English and students tend to not pay attention to the lesson. To avoid the students being bored or uninterested, we should add a graphic novel that students find fun and easy to read.
  • The activity attached to the graphic novel could be just as fun - the students tend to retain more when they understand and have fun.
Strategy Two:
  • I picked strategy two because in any English class it’s important to know the different genres of books. The graphic novel makes it easier for the students to grasp the context of the content through the pictures. The genre stands out more through Graphic Novels more so than a regular Novel.
  • The activity helps the students generate knowledge of the different genres that were talked about in class. The students should pick the genre that they need more help grasping so that they learn more about that genre when doing the activity.
Strategy Three (my personal favorite):
  • The reason behind this is simple, not all students read at the same pace so keeping the material light with the pictures and less text it helps them process more during the lesson.
  • The graphic novel (might) keep the students on track in class by reading it instead of spark noting it.
  • We want them to learn not just pass.
Challenges:
  • Be defeated or refuse to do it based on their art skills. (Make sure that the students know you are not grading based off art skills, only content)

  •  Might mix up the Direct and Indirect even after the activity and going over it multiple times.
  • Students still wont read the required text

THANK YOU FOR LISTENING TO MY PRESENTATION 😃
