Why I picked this book:
- I was familiar with Laura Robb from two of my past classes.
- It was about teaching middle school and I hadn't read a book in this class about middle school. I wanted to compare the ways of teaching high school to middle school.
- This book cover said the key word ‘strategic’ so I knew that there would be lessons and teaching ideas.
- It was fairly shorter than the rest of the other books and short books = better comprehension for me.
Teaching Idea One: Have students read individually in class. (Avoid popcorn or round-robin reading).
Teaching Idea Two: Using context clues for struggling/reluctant readers.
Teaching Idea Three: Guided Practices with all students.
Challenges:
- “Remember that it’s frustrating for proficient readers and struggling readers to work together in partners. The self-esteem and confidence of the struggling reader can plummet if she's paired with an outstanding reader who is impatient to move forward quickly” (Robb, 140).
- Students of any reading level might feel defeated for many reasons.
- The school some of us will teach at might not have the funds to help the guided practice (Funds for Books).
- Not every student will have the same look/opinion/thoughts about the book.
